My painting process

My painting process begins well in advance of my time in the studio, often spanning several hours or even days. I engage with a diverse array of content across various fields and subjects, including archaeology, nature, music, and other artistic works—anything that captures my interest in life.
Once I have thoroughly explored outside the studio, I proceed to prepare my painting environment. Typically, the most recent piece I completed remains on my easel; I carefully remove it to my drying area and choose a new canvas or panel for my next work.
I rarely sketch or plan out a painting. Instead I frequently bring images that have colors or figures that have peaked my interest from my exploration stage. Images of ancient sculpture, or landscape all contribute to a sense of purpose and inspiration for the piece ahead.
Then I begin. I usually start by selecting one oil color and an oil medium, an extender like linseed oil, then as soon as I have some composition or shape I pick another color. My work takes form and I refine as I go. The start to finish time duration is usually between 1-3 hours.
I have a set painting schedule and I paint three days a week. Having a schedule keeps me on track. It also allows me to have a life outside of work!
